Do you know your employee rights?

Employees in the Czech Republic benefit from strong legal protection rooted in national and EU law. Knowing your rights helps you make sure workplace decisions are lawful, transparent and fair.

You have the right to ask the union to join you or to act as a mediator during the investigation of any reported misconduct. A union's testimony is considered by courts in individual employment disputes.

1. Fair and transparent treatment

The Czech Labour Code (Zákoník práce) guarantees equal treatment, prohibits discrimination, and requires clear information about duties, expectations and changes in employment conditions.

EU Equal Treatment Directives reinforce protection based on gender, age, race, religion, disability and other characteristics.

2. Safe and healthy work environment

Czech employers have a legal duty (BOZP) to prevent risks, manage workload, address psychosocial risks (stress, burnout, harassment) and provide training.

EU Health & Safety Directives extend this across Europe.

3. Information and consultation

Unions must receive clear information on organizational changes, contracts terms, working hours and restructuring.

The EU Information and Consultation Directive and Czech Labor Code requires transparent communication about major decisions.

4. Equal opportunities and non-discrimination

You are to be judged on qualifications and performance — not personal characteristics — across recruitment, promotion, remuneration, training and work allocation.

5. Representation and collective support

You have the legal right to join a trade union.

Employers must allow unions to represent employees, consult and bargain collectively.

6. Work-life balance

The Labour Code regulates working hours, rest periods, overtime limits and vacation.

The EU Work-Life Balance Directive reinforces parental and carers' leave and flexible arrangements.

7. Understanding your options

Employers must provide clear written information before you agree to any change in employment terms, including the consequences and available alternatives.
